Comprehensive Eye Examinations
A patient health and eye history questionnaire will be mailed to you when you schedule your exam to obtain pertinent information which may affect your eyes and vision. This includes a list of medications you are taking. Dr. Beckman will review your health history and eye symptoms with you at the beginning of the exam and discuss any questions, problems, or concerns you may have.
The initial tests involve checking your vision with and without correction, testing depth perception, color vision (males only), eye muscle balance and coordination and focusing ability. A peripheral vision test is done as well as corneal topography. Also, corneal curvature is measured and pupil reflexes are evaluated. Lastly, the Optomap retinal imaging is done.
During the examination the eye pressure is checked (one of four tests for glaucoma done during the exam). Then, an advanced microscope, lenses and lights are used to view all of the eye structures and look for disease or abnormalities. Sometimes dilating eye drops are used to help evaluate the retina. These tests give important baseline data and the terms are explained in the section of the eye definitions.
Normally the retina is viewed on a screen in the exam room on high magnification and the ability to view the different layers of the retina. This advanced diagnostic technology is not covered by insurance, but is prescribed by Dr. Beckman in order to detect and diagnose diseases earlier. All the equipment is state-of-the-art and the newest technology. Special childrens' tests and instrumentation are used when necessary to provide a more enjoyable experience for young patients and to obtain more precise results.
